Stephanie, a sports management major here at Bowling Green State University. This is my third year here at BGSU. I am an avid hiker, biker, photographer and I will play almost any sport. But I most enjoy softball, which I am president of the club team for BGSU. I also am the current Youth Sports coordinator for the Geary Family YMCA of Fostoria. Check us out! http://www.gearyfamilyymca.org/
As I mentioned before this is a blog kept to fulfill course requirements for SM3950. Our first meeting we also did an introduction and talked about our athletic like/dislikes and what global sporting event we would want to be involved with. So I will brief you on those.
I enjoy being involved in all types of sports from solo events like golf to team sports like basketball. My personal favorite sport to participate in is softball. I have played for about 18 years now competitively and also coached for 4. I have played in 5 USSSA World Series events from 12u-18u. I have also played basketball, soccer, golf, track, and cross-country competitively.
If I could attend any global sporting event it would be either a Super Bowl, or the Olympics. I do not have a preference on the Olympic event, since they have removed Softball. I would like to experience both a team sport and individual competition though.
I look forward to many more interesting topics and discussions in this course, and I hope you comment along the way!

Hi Stephanie,
ReplyDeleteNow that I know I can post a comment, I will elaborate a bit more on your introduction. I did not realize that you were so involved with softball, but that is great. Where did you play in World Series games? Were you on a traveling team? How many teams do you play against as a club team? What position do you play? I may have mentioned before, but one of my nieces played on a traveling team (from Avon Lake) and now she is coaching in the Cleveland area (after playing at Malone College in Canton, OH). Like you, I was so disappointed when they took softball out of the Olympics. I remember in 1996, when the Olympics were held in Atlanta, and there was so little coverage of Women's softball, I actually thought about driving to Atlanta to see one of the games. I hope that softball is reinstated in the future.
Thanks too for sharing the link to the YMCA where you work. It looks like a good site.
I look forward to reading more of your entries and hearing your ideas in class!

Stephanie,
ReplyDeleteBased on reading your blog introduction, I could tell just how passionate you are about softball. While I never played the game myself, I have similar experience with playing on a travel team as I played competitive soccer with significant travel for many years until I graduated from high school. Your obvious dedication to competing in softball comes through in your blog.
I also hope someday to have the opportunity to experience the Super Bowl in person. While I had the amazing opportunity to be "live" at a college bowl game, I can only imagine the excitement of seeing all of the action in person at a Super Bowl game. It is interesting how passionate Americans are about our football. Yet, the sport has not received the level of global interest that other sports such as soccer, etc. have despite the hype in the U.S. I look forward to reading more in your blog.

ReplyDeleteStephanie,
ReplyDeleteI played some softball back in the day as well and wish I continued to play it as much as you did. Its awesome to see young women like you who go so far in woman's sports like softball. It does not gain the public attention like it should. So I think its awesome you went to the World Series for it. Another thing, is that I would also love to attend a Super Bowl. The atmosphere would be so lively because of how into the game everybody there is. Yes, Id rather have been at the Packers Super Bowl but I would still chose to go to it any day. I enjoyed your blog and all the things in the layout to make it stand out. Looking forward to seeing more that you write.
Steph,
ReplyDeleteHey, after reading your introduction I saw that both of us played baseball/softball in high school which is pretty cool. Even cooler is that you have played in 5 world series events. My junior year in high school our team made it to the state championship and our team went 3-2 which got us 5th in the state. Can't wait to comment on further discussion post.
Thank you all for your comments. I'd like to respond to some questions you posed.
ReplyDelete@TennisProf- I have competed in 4 World Series tournaments including the states of Florida, Indiana, Kansas, and Maryland. Florida was amazing because we got to play at the Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports. It was by far the most amazing sports complex I've ever seen. A link to view the complex layout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESPN_Wide_World_of_Sports_Complex
I have competed on two travel teams since I was 8years of age, the Fostoria Redhawks for 10 years, and the Tri-County Explosion for 2.
Now on the BGSU Club softball, we compete with 5inter-league squads, Michigan State and Indiana University South Bend are two examples.
All of these seasons my primary position has been shortstop. That is what I call "home." But I have also pitched, caught, and utility.
@Kelsey- Where you a pitcher? Club softball is in need! ha
Is it fast pitch? I take it you are a left-handed batter (judging from the pic).
ReplyDeleteYes, fastpitch. I am a left-handed batter, mostly slap/bunt specialist, but have been able to hit the long ball from the left side. In all honesty, I feel like I am handicapped when I try to bat right-handed anymore. You would think I have been hitting left my whole life, not just 6 years!
